Eat like it matters. That’s the motto at the newly opened café, Farmers’ Café in Mumbai.
Just a street away from the hustle and bustle of Linking Road in Bandra, people are queuing up to get a table at this place that prides itself in making the world a happier place through conscious, sustainable food.
Their kitchen at Farmer’s Café in Mumbai uses organic produce and local ingredients as much as possible and have a diverse menu to suit the diverse eating choices. From the keto diet, vegetarian and non-veg options to the gluten-free, paleo and vegan options, there is something for everyone.
I waited patiently perusing the menus while watching more and more people arrive all eager to get a table, it what seems to be the place to be seen! I was happy to wait in the basking sunshine for my table, while most crowded inside the air conditioned Farmers’ Café in anticipation for their table.
Coffee at the Farmers’ Café is roasted by Blue Tokai, so you know you are in good hands. Lots of alternative options to milk too, almond milk, soy and coconut options are available. Pricing here for a coffee is similar to what you would expect to pay in Melbourne, around 160 INR ( 3 dollars back home) and a lot cheaper than in the UK (around £3).
One of the best selection of cakes is at the Farmers’ Café, and I had already decided my cake and coffee before I had ordered my food. Once seated, as per all places in Mumbai, there’s someone who serves the drinks, another takes the food/drink order, others that seem to wander and clear up, others still wandering following others that are wandering, but the chaos is what makes India charming.
Once I’ve ordered and seemingly reassured with a yes yes madam (while shaking their heads the opposite way- which is affectionately known as the Mumbai wobble) I’m never quite sure that they understood what I wanted. But that’s all part of the fun. The iced green tea with chia seeds and rose petals was refreshing and the paleo chicken bowl delicious. I have no strong food group I belong too, so choosing my meal was simply based on what sounded nice and a lot of looking around at seeing other people’s meals! And yes I may have had a quick look at their insta…
A portion of their proceeds at the Farmers’ Cafe in Mumbai go towards bettering the lives of farmers across the country, so that’s a good thing right? But it makes you wonder what else can be done and I’m glad there are places like this. Mumbai is a chaotic and diverse city that I think you’ll either love or hate. But if you do visit, come here and go to other similar places that try to do some good. It’s not the cheapest place, but it made me happy.
Afterwards wander the markets around Linking Road, go to the Kulture Shop – pick up some prints from local artists and try picking yourself up a bargain or two.
