When I accidentally stumbled across this popular eatery in Fitzrovia (having always queued in Kings Cross) I was super excited purely because this Caravan was huge and hardly busy at all compared to their first one. Although this has clearly changed, and Caravan Fitzrovia is now as popular as ever. I love the fact the ‘take-away’ section at the front of Caravan is the ideal spot for a quick coffee and some monkey cake. Oh my, the monkey cake. You don’t understand how good it is until you’ve tried it.
Caravan’s buns, croissants are quite unique and offer a lot of satisfaction, especially after a gym session. And if the restaurant is busy, you can always hang out in the front area, and share the long table with brunch loving Londoners, eager to spend their time sipping their coffee on a Saturday afternoon with friends and catching up on their antics over the week. I try hard not to listen to the gossip about who went out with who, but when you share a table, surely that allows you to share a story or two?
Love brunching here at Caravan in Central London, the antipodean-style place is super relaxed and carefree. The food menu comprises an interesting mix of ingredients that work together, whether it’s the safe option of avo on toast, or the granola – there’s something here to suit everyone, make sure you grab a side of mushrooms too! And when you recommend a place so often to others, be expected to bump into a familiar face or two! Managed to come here once for a ‘lunch’ with a friend…yes not brunch! Shock horror! And was pleasantly surprised by the abundant of delicious food on the menu. I went for a salad that needed a bit of translating but was delicious! I haven’t tried the dinner menu yet…but I will one day!
Great atmosphere with great plants and tonnes of space, well what else do you expect from an antipodean styled place? You can even sit at the coffee bar and watch the ‘breakfast’ cocktails while you sip your coffee and pretend that you wouldn’t prefer a breakfast cocktail! Hehe! And if you do succumb to the temptation, which can easily happen with me, I recommend you discuss your options with the friendly staff who are always happy to make a recommendation or two! Delicately prepared cocktails are always a good idea and from the first sip you will have convinced yourself it was worth it!
You can even take some coffee beans home with you and the Caravan book! I was given both recently as a birthday gift, they clearly saw from my Instagram I was a regular and would probably like the gift. They know me well.
So now in Lockdown, I can have the ‘Caravan’ experience at home. I remember as a young child in Oz spending many Xmas holidays in camping grounds packed with tents and caravans. This experience in Fitzrovia certainly creates a new meaning of the word ‘caravan’ for me.
You’ll be happy to know, there’s a few Caravan’s around in London (luckily it hasn’t become chain-like), perhaps even a new one just opened in January! An ideal take away one where you can pop in for a quick flat white. But I’m not telling you anymore, go check it out for yourself. The coffee is good. Very good. They have their own roastery! Enough said!
