Cornershop, Yarraville

coffee art at CornershopSurprisingly I never drank coffee while I was growing up and living in Melbourne, even though every morning I would wake up to the beautiful aroma of coffee percolating from the kitchen.  My parents take coffee seriously, stocking up the coffee supplies regularly and travelling to Brunswick (Melbourne) to get their coffee.  They are now quite perplexed by my late interest in coffee but loving the fact that now when I visit, they too get treated to being dragged to new places to try coffee.  Although being very traditional parents they won’t steer too far away from their regular blue mountain blend.

My mum grew up in Yarraville and I love the small village feel it has so close to the city.  The Cornershop is sooo full of charm and ideal for a coffee or two.  The staff are very welcoming and I never feel rushed, although I have to say it is a bit like that everywhere in Melbourne.  I remember when I arrived in London being told by a fellow-Ausssie that if I was any more relaxed I’d be horizontal. Hehe!  I have changed a bit in London, I’ve had to, but when I visit Melbourne, I come here first.  It’s my place to re-group my thoughts and it grounds me.  I glance out the window and I wonder if I made the right decision.  Back in 2007 I had to choose how to spend my hard-earned savings.  Pay for a deposit for a place here in Yarraville or travel to London and explore the world? For me, I clearly made the right decision but it’s entertaining to ponder how my life might have been different.coffee, scrambled eggs at Cornershop,, Yarraville

Cornershop uses Profile Coffee and I was so glad to be able to purchase some to take back to London.  From a roasters nearby in Footscray, they pride themselves on an honest relationship between farmer, roaster and barista. They have two blends: one for black coffee and one for milk coffee.  The only problem I have is I only bought one packet with me and I’m wondering how to convince my mum to send me more! Brunch here is amazing and it’s a great place to meet a friend and catch up.  Cornershop really is the hub of Yarraville and the large communal table at the front is ideal for chatting to the locals.  Outside seating is available and my preferred preference.  The outside dunny takes me back to when I was a kid visiting my grandparents in the county.  Luckily I’ve never spotted a spider, but I have looked!

I recommend all the coffee, my favourite is the flat white.  The scrambled eggs are too die for!
